What Is A Free Radical?

A free radical is an atom or group of atoms that has an unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive. Free radicals may be formed through natural human physiological processes as well as from the environment. They may be the result of diet, stress, smoking, alcohol, exercise, inflammation, drugs or exposure to sunlight and air pollutants. In animal tissues, free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and age-related diseases.

What Are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that interact with and neutralize free radicals, thus preventing them from causing damage. Antioxidants are also known as free radical scavengers.

Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions).
